Many people think that a retaining wall is mainly for aesthetic reasons. Although it can be, the main reason and purpose for a retaining wall is within its name. It is to provide structural support to help keep soil in place and to help retain it. During a heavy rainfall it becomes a safety feature to avoid washouts, ruts, erosion, flooding, and water damage. A retaining wall will reduce the speed at which water would typically travel by spreading it over the surface. Drainage pipes and channels can be created and integrated which further reduces and dilutes the spread of excess water.<\/p>\n

A retaining wall can also help create more space in your yard or desired area. When done correctly, it can also be a nice aesthetic feature, and a feature that provides functionality. Many people will plant flowers and shrubs in the soil above the retaining wall, and find that many plants, flowers and shrubs thrive in this setting. Another great feature of retaining walls is that they allow water to soak into the soil rather than just running off the surface, providing much needed water and nutrients to the root system.<\/p>\n
